Abstract

The effects of aluminum dopant concentration on the morphology and electrical characteristics of zinc oxide varistors were investigated. Grain size does not significantly vary with the amount of aluminum dopant, but only the breakdown voltage, nonlinearity voltage coefficient α and k values were affected. An increasing trend was observed on the breakdown voltage at approximately 300 V, 410 V and 650 V and α values at 2.36, 2.44 and 3.48 for the 3 wt%, 5 wt% and 7 wt% aluminum-doped zinc oxide respectively. The k values decreased with increasing aluminum dopant.
