Elemental composition by SEM-EDX of sub-micrometer particles of atmospheric aerosols in De La Salle University, Manila
Abstract
Atmospheric aerosol particles were collected on top of a 12-storey building (14°33.867'N, 120°59.577'E) approximately 50m above sea level and along the path of a scanning LIDAR about 120m away at De La Salle University, Manila by a low-volume impactor in order to investigate the characteristics of sub-micrometer aerosols. Morphologies and elemental composition of individual particles were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope and an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer. Elemental analysis revealed high level of carbon in the sub-micrometer particles. This could be attributed to the exhaust fumes coming from vehicles in the busy streets of Taft, Vito Cruz and other streets in the vicinity.
