Abstract

In our previous work, we reported about length measurements on corals and fishes employing a stereoscopic method using artificial neural networks in the laboratory setting. Employing this method in situ, water properties like turbidity and water current might affect the accuracy of the method. We have investigated the effect of turbidity (in terms of the amount of total suspended solids (TSS) present in the water) and the effect of water current on the accuracy of the stereoscopic length measurement of objects. Results show that within the typical values of TSS, the method is capable of measuring length with accuracy of 1 mm. Effects of water current are also negligible.
