Abstract

A simple setup was constructed to investigate the magnetic behavior of a multi-phased, bulk YBCO superconductor. From the analysis, repulsion between the magnet and superconductor was evident at external magnetic fields 9.97 mT and below. A possible case of attraction between the magnet and the superconductor was also found at external fields 16.12 mT and above.
By increasing the external magnetic field from 0 to 318 mT and decreasing it back to 0 mT, the material was able to display hysteric behavior due to flux pinning. A permanent magnetic field of –1.27 mT was also observed due to the trapped flux in the superconductor. Furthermore, a parameter HAB = –0.47 mT which is the magnetic field associated with the trapped flux as the external field was increased from 0.80 mT to 318 mT and decreased back to 0.80 mT was also able to be extracted from the data.
