Abstract

In this paper we present results on measurements of the index of refraction of water (relative measurements) and air (absolute measurements). The results were obtained using a fiber optic version of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The introduction of fibers resulted in a very stable interference pattern allowing for highly accurate measurements of fringe shifts. The accuracy obtained (six decimal digits for the index of refraction) clearly illustrates the potential of the system as a refractometer.
