Abstract

The paper discusses main objectives for laboratory teaching and presents evidence about which objectives can and which cannot be supported by laboratory teaching. A distinction will be made between different laboratory objectives which each require a rather different teaching methodology. Practical suggestions will be given based on the author's experience in Physics teaching in Indonesia, the Netherlands, and the Philippines. Most suggestions apply equally-well to high technology and low technology laboratory environments.
