Abstract

An autonomous electric circuit similar to the design of Chua et al. with a single nonlinear element, a three-segment piecewise-linear resistor, has been implemented. This system clearly exhibits chaos. Using a variable resistor, the slopes of the active resistor can be varied to allow access to a broad range of the phase space of the oscillator. Period doubling bifurcations are observed as well as Double Scroll and Rossler attractors. The circuit can be modelled by a set of three coupled first-order differential equations. A computer simulation of the circuit has also been implemented for comparison. This package provides an excellent introduction to the theory of chaos for beginners since it serves to illustrate the basic physical concepts very concretely.
