Abstract

The direct thermal oxidation of Zn metal foils was successfully conducted in ambient air below the melting point of Zn. The oxidized Zn foils have an XRD peak corresponding to the (101) reflection of hexagonal wurtzite ZnO. SEM images reveal that needle-like structures start to emerge at an oxidizing temperature of 350 °C. Raman spectroscopy further confirms the synthesis of ZnO with characteristic modes at 238, 454 and 560 cm-1. This present work demonstrates the promise of a simple, economical, low temperature and catalyst-free preparation of ZnO by direct thermal oxidation.
