Abstract

Optical characterization of Er:YAG, Nd:YAG, Ruby, and Ti:Sapphire laser crystals was performed using a simple spectroscopic set-up. Different light sources from ultraviolet to infrared region were used. The fluorescence and absorption spectra of each crystal were identified. Er:YAG and Nd:YAG exhibit absorption peaks throughout the UV-NIR region. Only Nd:YAG and Ruby crystals fluoresce at ultraviolet source (λ = 252 nm) indicating that other laser crystals require different light source to fluoresce. These results indicate the effectiveness of the spectroscopic set-up.
