The beauty and power of divergent integrals

Abstract

Divergent integrals arise naturally in many areas of physics, and they are typically "tamed" as though they are dangerous beasts wreaking havoc in the mathematical landscape of physics. In this talk, I will discuss how divergent integrals became beautiful and powerful, offering in the process insight into the intimate relationship between divergent integrals and physical boundary conditions, and offering a novel method of evaluating convergent integrals using divergent integrals.

About the Speaker

Eric Galapon, National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Diliman

Eric Galapon is a Professor of Physics at the National Institute of Physics of the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he also obtained his PhD in Physics in 2001. He was a UP Postdoctoral Fellow at the Universidad del País Vasco in Bilbao from 2004-2005. He was the Outstanding Young Scientist Awardee for Physics of the National Academy of Science and Technology in 2010. He has also been recognized by the National Research Council of the Philippines with the 2013 NRCP Achievement Award for Physics. His work focuses on the foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum measurements, and mathematical physics. His recent article [EPL 113 60007, (2016)] on quantum decoherence published in Europhysics Letters has been cited as one of the journal's top contributions in 2016.
